Enclosure No. 7.
^ No. 4399j dated Bombay Castle, the 15th September 1871.
From— W. Wedderburn, Esq., Acting Secy, to the Govt, of Bombay, Political Dept.
To—To the Secretary to the Government of India, Foreign Department.
In continuation of my letter No. 3589, dated the 5th ultimo,
I am directed to forward, for the information of the Government of
India, copy of further papers received from the Commissioner in
Sind (under endorsements Nos. 484 and 492, dated the 21st and 24th
ultimo, respectively), relative to the Persian movements on Chaga
and the Seistan boundary.
No. 47, dated Quettah, the 22nd July 1871.
From—C aptain C. H. Harrison, Political Agent at Khelat.
To—The Political Superintendent, Frontier, Upper Sind.
In acknowledging the receipt of your letter No. 1057 of the 3rd instant,
I have the honor to submit further information on the subject reported in my
No. 37 giving position of Surhud, motive cause for Sirdar Surfuraz Khan’s
proceeding into foreign territory, and other details. Had I known the circum
stances now reported, I should not have written so urgently as I did in letter
above-quoted.
2. Surlmd, a range of hills many miles in length, commences at south of
Chaga near Koh Sooltan, and divides the Seistan and Mekran countries, Jalk
being on the left and the latter country on the right. Where this range ter
minates I have not as yet been able to ascertain.
3. Some time in 1870 a large kafila from Nooshky and Chaga, com
prising 700 camels laden with grain and cloth, were proceeding to Jalk and
arrived at Kode Mashkait, four marches south of Jalk; there they were attacked
by Syud Khan, Surhudee, with fifteen hundred men, who plundered camels and
everything that they had. Three months ago Surfuraz Khan collected 700
Belooch to take his revenge, and had made about thirty marches, attacked
Hulleem Khan’s village, and was about to proceed against Syud Khan who
had plundered them the previous year, when he was overtaken by Kumal
Khan, son of the Bunder Sirdar, Sirdar Shureef Khan, Narooee of Boorj,
Syud Khan, Surhudee, Mahomed Kusa, son of Baran Mahomed Hussunee
with a large force of Belooch and 1,000 Persian sowars. Fighting lasted
for two days and two nights, in which time Surfuraz Khan lost 21 men.
He then took up a position on the Surhud Hill, but, being without water,
had to listen to terms offered by Shureef Khan, through the son of Kumal
Khan, viz., to restore all plundered property and further_ to pay a fine ol
100 camels, “ that Surfuraz Khan’s son, Nadur, should make his salaam to Host
Mahomed Khan, Surteep of Boorjund, after which he would be released ;
that for the future no aggressive act should be committed by either party, and
no obstruction given to kafilas.”
4. Surfuraz Khan agreed to these terms with one proviso, viz , that
Syud Khan could not expect immunity from attack unless he returned wiiat
had been plundered from them the previous year. This Syud Khan agreed
to do. ^
5. With reference to vour concluding paragraph I have the honor to state
that 1 had no intention it should be understood that Chaga had been occupied
by Persian troops, but that Surfuraz Khan had to a certain extent acknowied ed
Persian supremacy by giving his son as an hostage. Under oi in niy ^ ^ ,
stances this would not have made much impression on me, but, liavl “^ T .;
when with the Perso-Belooch mission, the tenure on which annexed
were held, I was apprehensive regarding Chaga, it being only six y mi
Nooshky, and situated as explained in my letter No. 88.
