In continuation of my letter No. 252, dated the 20th July 1870, I
am directed to forward to you, for submission to the Government of India,
the enclosed copy of a letter, with accompaniments, from Sir E. Russell,
Political Resident at Aden, No. 158—976, dated the 18th August 1870,
. connected with the claim of the Sultan of Lahej to Little Aden. Copy of
a letter No. 150—981 of the 80th June last, and of its enclosure, from
Major-General Tremenheere, the present Political Resident, is also forwarded
herewith.
2. In this letter General Tremenheere, concurring in the former
proposal of Sir E. Russell, recommends, 1st, that a sum of dollars 5,000
should be granted to the Sultan of Lahej as compensation for the expen
diture incurred by him in coercing the Akrabee tribe; and 2nd, that
the opportunity should be taken formally to declare the independence of
the Akrabee.
8. The grounds for these recommendations are fully set forth in General
Tremenheere’s letter and in Sir E. Russell’s letter No. 158—976 of the 18th
August 1870, now forwarded; and I am desired to submit the request of
His Excellency in Council that the Government of India may be pleased to
accord their sanction to the proposed measures.
4. I am to explain that the delay in referring the matter to the
Government of India has arisen from Sir E. Russell’s despatch of the 18th
August last having been mislaid.
5. The matters referred to in paragraphs 5 and 6 of General
Tremenheere’s letter regarding the intended aggressions of the Sultan of
Lahej have been disposed of by Government of India’s letter No. 1076 P
of the 2nd June last, a copy of which was furnished to the Political
Resident with this Government’s letter No. 2788 of the 21st idem.

In continuation of my letter No. 95—580 of the 26th May 1870, I have
the honor to forward a translation of the document referred to in paragraph 7,
being an order from Captain Haines to the Sultan of Lahej to coerce his
subject, the Akrabee Chief. I have searched through the correspondence of
that period, and find in letter No. 29, dated the 12th June 1850, from Captain
Haines, to Government, corroboration of this, and that the Government in
No. 143 of the 4th July 1850, confirmed Captain Haines’s action and his
correctness in calling the Sultan of Lahej as the head of the tribe to punish the
Akrabee, his vassal.
2. I had commenced to have the correspondence copied, but find it bulky,
extending as it does over so long a period that I cannot accomplish it without
throwing the current work of the
establishment into arrears; having
