Kesident, Captain Hames, the grounds for this application being that Captain
Haines made the demand under a misapprehension of the Suttan’s positio/vvith
regard to the Akrabees. ^
,,, 4> , ^ ow , if ' appears from Captain Haines’ letter of 12th June 1850 that
although he describes the Akrabees as vassals of Lahej, he was fully aware of
tiieir virtual independence ever since Bir Ahmed had been wrested by them
from the grandfather of the then Sultan, and it seems to His Uxcellencv in
Council more than probable that Captain Haines’s order originated in a desire
to give the Lahej sultan an opportunity of re-establishing his authority rather
than in a belief that such authority existed, as a matter of fact, at the
time. Such being the case, the Lahej Sultan would have no claim whatever
to compensation. At the same time, considering the importance of securing
his good will and co-operation, and the desirability of permanently adjusting
the relations between the two tribes at variance, although His Excellency
Jo C-cd considers tlmpohcy of making large payments from time to time
to the Chiefs around Aden to be very questionable, he will not object as a
special case, to grant a reasonable sum not exceeding |2,500, tlm sum first
applied for as a gilt to the Sultan on the part of the British Government.
