March 1865 he made common cause with Taj Mahomed and attempted an in-
sunection in Ivutchee having for its object the assassination of the Khan and
placing his infant son on the throne. The insurrection, however, was put down.
Mod a Mahomed fled to Candahar and his estates were confiscated. Of this
period Sir 11. Green writes that from the time Taj Mahomed was secured and
that Sirdar Moola Mahomed had fled, the most perfect security redned
throughout Belooehistan. J
^ c ^°^ er 1867, Moola Mahomed returned from Candahar with the
mention of again creating an insurrection, but being supported onh by a
few minor Chiefs, the attempt was speedily quelled, and he again fled with a
few followers to the Murree hills. In December 1868, troubles were a-ain
raised by the Jam of Beyla, in which Moola Mahomed took no part • but a
few months afterwards, notwithstanding the advice and instructions of Colonel
Phayre, he proceeded with others to Beyla and marched upon Khelat, where
a collison was only prevented by the prudence and tact of Captain Harrison
Under the wise guidance of that officer, the Khan offered to restore to ^the
Sirdar his hereditary lands, and to forgive the past with the promise that the
lands which had been before granted to him by the Khan himself, but which
had been resumed on his rebellion in 1865, should be restored to him upon
his continuing to be loyal and well-behaved. The Sirdar, however, refused
these temperate conditions, insisted upon the unconditional restoration of all
the lands which had been resumed, and ultimately retired to Seebee, from
whence, on hearing of the defeat and flight of his former confederate, the Jam
lie again fled to the Murree hills.
14. He has since made an appeal, to which I shall presently advert, to
the Ameer of Cabul, in which, in derogation of the rights of his own sove-
reign, he says that Beloochistan lias alvays been subject to Afghanistan, and
all rules and regulations for it have always been framed by that kingdom. '
15. Of the minor Chiefs, Alla Dinna Koord, Adam Khan Bungkoolzye
and the Baisanee Chief next in rank to Moola Mahomed, it is unnecessary to
say more than that they submitted to the authority of the Khan, and were
told that they might return to their lands, and they are now enumerated by
Captain Harrison among those who are well disposed towards His Highness.
16. Azad Khan, of Kharan, although his name figures frequently in the
history of Khelat affairs, can scarcely be called a dependent \ffif Khelat. His
connection with the State is mainly owing to his being allied by marriage to
the late Khan, on the strength of which he entertains pretentions to° the
Khanate. . He may be rather considered, however, as a semi-independent Chief,
a restless intriguer, who has at one time acknowledged the authority of the
Shah, and at another professed himself subordinate to Candahar. He has
allied himself with the enemies of the Khan and must take the consequences
ot defeat. ^
17. It is necessary to distinguish only one other Chief, Sirdar Noordeen
of Wud, Chief of the Minguls. He appears to have been concerned in every
attempt to subvert the authority of the Khan that has occurred since the death
of Nasseer Khan. It does not appear to he alleged that he has any particular
grievance to complain of, and his disaffection seems to have arisen chieflv from
his connection with the Jam of Beyla. After his defeat in 1868, he fled to
Candahar, from which place he does not appear to have yet returned.
18. As regards the remaining Chiefs of Beloochistan, it appears from the
report of Captain Harrison that only eight Chiefs, of whom five belon 0, to the
Mingul tribe, are found to take part with Moola Mahomed, while jT list is
given ot fitty-one, including Moola Mahomed s brother, who are well-disposed
towards the Khan and submit to his authority.
19. The Khan himself is spoken of, on coming to the throne, as a lad
of weak intellect. This appears to have been a hasty judgment based upon
his want of education and his long seclusion in the harem which, no doubt,
unfitted him on his first accession to power to deal with the turbulent people
he had to govern.
