village of Afghanistan, to say nothing of Lash and Jowain. Your Excellency
will no doubt be able to remove such an apprehension from the mind of His
Excellency the Viceroy of India. The Persian Government have no thought
beyond that of preserving their own territory and frontiers. I beg once more to
give you the fullest assurance on this subject.

Translated ynemorandum from Mirza Saeed Khan, to Her Britannic Majesty’s Minister at
Teheran,—dated the ^>th July 1871.
In continuation of the replying memorandum of the Eoreign Department,
dated June 30th, respecting Lash and Jowain, it begs to state that the answer
to this department has been received from His Majesty the Shah, as follows :
“No order has ever been given to the Ameer of Kayen to go and take
Lash and Jowain by force of arms. The Persian Government has repeatedly
given assurances that it will not interfere wuth the affairs of Afghanistan.”
The respected British mission can give assurances, in accordance with His
Majesty’s reply to any quarter it may consider necessary.

To—Her Britannic Majesty’s Minister at Teheran.
In compliance with Jan Ibrahim’s instruction, I left this on Eriday,
the 7th instant at 11 p. m., and proceeded to Lar, where it was reported the
Shah was encamped. On arriving there the following morning, no signs of the
royal camp were to be seen. Some muleteers who were passing told me His
Majesty was encamped at the foot of Mound Demavend, in a valley called
Velaroom, I consequently pushed on and reached his camp at 2 p". m. on
Saturday, a distance of 60 miles from Gulahek, over execrable mountain roads.
His Majesty was out hunting, and on his return Jan Ibrahim’s note
was submitted to His Majesty by the Motemed-ul-Moolk, who was instructed
to give me a written reply as well as the following message for communication
to Jan Ibrahim :
That Persia has no intention of obtaining possession of Lash and Jow^ain
by force; that the reported increase of the Persian force in Seistan was incor-
rect, as it consisted of only one regiment on garrison duty there; and that Jan
Ibrahim can assure the Viceroy of India that Persia contemplates no ao'ores-
sive movements against Afghanistan either at present or hereafter.
Having allowed the horses sufficient time to rest themselves I left the
