One of the Secretaries of the Foreign Office called upon me this morning
and read to me an autograph letter addressed by the Shah to the Minister for
Foreign Affairs.
His Majesty therein stated that his attention had been drawn to an
article of a newspaper published in Turkish and Arabic at Baghdad, wherein
an account is given of the reception at Constantinople of His Eoyal Highness
Abbas Mirza. The Shah complains bitterly of a statement made therein, to
the effect that the late Mahomed Shah had ap-

to appoint.” His Majesty denounces as false; and of the audi
ence given to the refugee Prince by the Sultan,
which, he said, was opposed to treaty and to the friendly relations subsisting
between the two States. His Majesty suspects that this proceeding on the
part of the Ottoman Government conceals some dark design calculated to give
rise to disturbance in this country.
The Shah desired his Minister to convey His Majesty’s sentiments on the
subject in an austere tone to the Ottoman Charge d’Affaires, and to request me
to move Your Excellency to use your endeavours for “ checking such mischie
vous proceedings.”
His Majesty also desired that a similar communication he conveyed to the
Russian Minister.
