him. I here being no immediate need for visiting Ras-ul-Khyma, I returned
accordingly, calling en route at Shargah and Debaie to pick up Banians
and conclude some settlements, arriving early on 11th December at Aboothabai.
asserted that the cause of Sheik Zaid’s return without reaching
Adeyd is that his Bedouins would not follow him—or what amounts to the same
thing, that he is run out of money, the promised subsidy from Azan bin dies
some say not having been paid.
Aboothabai looks very deserted, and it is said that, owing to the contribu
tions levied by the Chief to carry on his expeditions in the interior, many more
people are desirous of leaving when they see an opportunity.
14. Sheik Zaid handed me a letter to your address regarding Adeyd which
the A1 Koheyat, who two years ago fled from Aboothabai to Guttur under the
late Kadim bin Nebeywan, have now colonized.
Mahomed bin Tani, when informing me that this tribe had left Guttur, said
that they had repaired the ancient towers at Adeyd and had housed themselves
there.
Sheik Zaid in conversation said that he could not reach Adeyd by land,

15. When called upon regarding the outstanding claims of British subjects
Sheik Zaid “ regretted he could not enforce those that were against people who
had left Aboothabai and settled at 4 Liwah,’ although this town is within the
Chief’s own territory. When they returned to Aboothabai he would force
them to pay up.” But seeing that for the last two years these people have not
returned, and Sheik Zaid himself admits they now carry on their pearl-fishing
independent of him, I do not see how, for the present at least, British subjects
are to recover advances made to “ Liwah” people.
It is to be hoped Sheik Zaid will take warning from this open desertion of
his subjects and turn his attention to trade, and leave his neighbours to fight
their own battles, for, even if he eventually succeed in breaking up the Adeyd
colony, it does not follow that the people will be any the more ready to return
to him, unless he can make up his mind to treat them better than heretofore.

16. I could see no way to effect a settlement of the mutual claims of
Aboothabai and Debaie. Both Chiefs firmly adhere to their former decisions, viz.,
that each one will have his cases settled by his own Cazi, which, of course,
precludes any approach to agreement.
17. After putting as many claims in way of settlement as circumstances
admitted of left Aboothabai on 13th and arrived Bahrein, 15th.
18. I had a long conversation with Sheik Eysa and Naser bin Jubbur,
Chief of the Nairn at Bahrein, regarding the mutual restitution by the “ Naims ”
and “ Gutherees ” of plundered property. But the lists furnished by either
side differ very widely, and it is not easy to see at present how an arrangement
likely to be acceptable to both sides can be arrived at; Sheik Eysa proposes as
the only way that a meeting should be convened on board in presence of
Assistant Resident and delegates from either side sworn respecting the plunder
each had in possession. But as the Chief mentioned Jasim bin Mahomed and
Jubbur bin Mohumalal Mosullim as essential witnesses on the other side, this
plan fell through, for all know that these two would never put their foot willingly
on board a British vessel.
