Agreement signed by the Chiel of Bahrein, dated
December 22, 1880.
(Translation.)
I, Isa-bin-Ali A1 Khalifa, Chief of Bahrein, hereby bind myself
and successors in the Government of Bahrein to the British
Government to abstain from entering into negotiations or making
treaties of any sort with any State or Government other than the
British without the consent of the said British Government, and
to refuse permission to any other Government than the British to
establish diplomatic or consular agencies or coaling depots in our
territory, unless with the consent of the British Government.
This engagement does not apply to or affect the customary
friendly correspondence with the local authorities of neighbouring
States on business of minor importance.
The above agreement is subject to the approval and acceptance
of his Excellency the Viceroy and Governor-General of India in
Council.

Exclusive Agreement of the Sheikh of Bahrein with the
British Government, dated March 13, 1892.
I, Esau-bin-Ali, Chief of Bahrein, in the presence of Lieutenant-
Colonel A. C. 1 albot, C.I.E., Political Resident A senior ranking political representative (equivalent to a Consul General) from the diplomatic corps of the Government of India or one of its subordinate provincial governments, in charge of a Political Residency. , Persian Gulf The historical term used to describe the body of water between the Arabian Peninsula and Iran. , do
hereby solemnly bind myself and agree, on behalf of myself,' my
heirs and successors, to the following conditions, viz. :
1. That I will on no account enter into any agreement or
correspondence with any Power other than the British Govern
ment.
2. That without the assent of the British Government I will
not consent to the residence within my territory of the agent of
any other Government.
. 3. That I will on no account cede, sell, mortgage, or otherwise
give for occupation any part of my territory save to the British
Government.
