^Vith reference to your despatch Ho.295 (543/2/37) of
the 31st July last regarding Persian interference with Arab
dhows, I transmit for your information the accompanying copies
of correspondence with the Admiralty as to the attitude to be
adopted in the event of such incidents recurring. The India
Office concur in the views expressed by the Admiralty.
2. In view of the oral assurances'given to you by the
Persian Ministry for Foreign Affairs that Persian warships
have been instructed not to molest Arab vessels in future
either in Arab territorial waters or bn the high seas, I
agree that the question of a formal warning to be addressed
to the Persian Government may be left in abeyance, to be re
considered if a further incidence should occur. This does
not, however, affect the main question of the principle

About this item

Content

This file contains correspondence concerning a number of incidents in which vessels of the Persian Government detained or interfered with Arab vessels in the Gulf. The correspondence discusses the details of these incidents (most of which relate to Bahraini vessels) and also contains broader discussions about how Britain should react to them.

On folios 53-55, the file contains the protocol agreed on in the event of a commanding officer of a British ship observing an Iranian warship or customs vessel interfering with a protected Arab vessel.

The file also contains an original account (in Arabic and English) of a Bahraini captain named Ali bin Abdullah Al Naaimi written after he and his vessel had been detained by the Persian authorities in 1941 (f 61).
