Letter regarding affairs within Wahhabi territory including Turkish involvement and there need of a conclusion to the situation, the sickness that has affected their force, and rumours that Abdoolla [Abdulla ibn Faisal ibn Turki al Sa'ud] has been killed.
The letter goes on to discuss the announcement in the papers of the British Government's recognition of Torkee [Turki bin Said]; news from France following the end of the Franco-Prussian war including hopes that Adolphe Thiers will remain in charge of the country until the monarchy can be restored there; and an acount by Pelly of the famine in Persia and Merewether's observations of the failure of the Persian government to buy sufficient grain.
The letter concludes by discussing affairs within the British Government including the likelihood of William Gladstone's government breaking up, the difficulties of forming a new one and the divisions within the Conservative party, which Merewether believes will only lead to a coalition government.
