The Political Resident A senior ranking political representative (equivalent to a Consul General) from the diplomatic corps of the Government of India or one of its subordinate provincial governments, in charge of a Political Residency. 's verbal arrangements on the 18th
instant thst we should communicate with our London head
office and obtain the Company's interpretation of paragraph
5 of Mr.Belles' letter to the Sheikh of Qatar dated ivth
May. 1955. f<J §
We have now been instructed to bring the follow
ing views to the notice of the Honourable the Political
Resident.
The Sheikh 1 s representative has no duties on
behalf of the Company but his duty is to watch over the
Sheikh's rights.
In these circumstances the Company does not feel
justified in drawing up any list of duties.
With reference to the point raised by the
Honourable the Political Resident A senior ranking political representative (equivalent to a Consul General) from the diplomatic corps of the Government of India or one of its subordinate provincial governments, in charge of a Political Residency. that in the event of the
Company adopting the abovementioned view the Company can
expect no assistance from the Sheikh's representative in
any difficulties, we are referred to the first lines of
Article "Si of the Conoession which state "The Sheikh agrees
that he will afford the necessary assistance to carry out
this Agreement and thp.t he will use his authority to protect
the Company's employees and property as far as possible".
We hare been further instructed to submit that
should the Sheikh fail in this obligation the Company will
be unable to drill artesian wells or carry out exploring,
etc. laid down under Article in of the Concession.

The volume includes: Programme of operations in Qatar from November 1936 to May 1937 (folios 110-118) and 'General and brief note on the water drilling operations of Petroleum Concessions Limited in Qatar' (folios 209-212).

There are some letters in Arabic, to and from the Sheikh of Qatar.

Arrangement

The documents in the volume are mostly arranged in chronological order. There are notes at the end of the volume, (folios 215-221). The file notes are arranged chronologically and refer to documents within the file; they give a brief description of the correspondence with reference numbers in red crayon, which refer back to that correspondence in the volume.

There is also an brief index at the beginning (f. 2) indicating the main topics covered in the volume.

Physical characteristics

The main foliation is written in pencil, circled, and can be found in the top right corner of the recto The front of a sheet of paper or leaf, often abbreviated to 'r'. side of each folio. The numbering commences at the title page with 1, then 2-37; 38 and 38A; 39-55; 56 and 56A; 57-198; 199 and 199A; 200 and 200A; 201-217; 218 and 218A and it carries on until 225, which is the last number given to the back cover. There is also a second foliation sequence, incomplete.
