In this letter, William Bruce, Resident at Bushire, reports the loss of the Honourable Company cruiser Ariel, which foundered in a squall about fifteen miles south east of Karrack [Jazīreh-ye Khārk], on its way from Bussora [Basra] to Bushire, on the morning of 18 March 1820. Bruce states that only five of eighty-three men on board survived. These five survivors made it to Karrack in a canoe, where the Shaik [Shaikh] provided them with a boat in which to travel to Bushire. Bruce relays details of the Ariel's fate and states that the survivors will proceed to the Presidency The name given to each of the three divisions of the territory of the East India Company, and later the British Raj, on the Indian subcontinent. by the first ship that is going there.
