5. I would reconmend another attempt to get the Treaty
signed without alteration, in order to keep, it in line with
those in force in the case of the other Sheikhs in treaty with
us, but I think we might i>v S Sheikh Abdullah a separate letter
at the same time explaining that it was important to have the
treaty worded on the same lines as others but assuring him
that we have no intention at present of pressing for fulfilment

these respects is clearly enunciated, I think we can afford
to reserve them tor the present for the reason that if trade
arc harbour facilities progress at Bahrain, as they are doing,
the trade for the greater part of the Qatr peninsula will
depend upon Bahrain, when we shall have practical control over
it.
6 . As regards Article VI of t he Ge ner al T reaty", I am of
opinion tnat it would be best for Sheikh Abdullah to sign the
treaty as a whole out with the reservation above the signature
in regard to the above Article that he does not subscribe to
Article VI.
7. Unless the Government consider that there is sufficient
urgency about the matter to necessitate its being pushed
immediately, I contemplate, if all goes well getting away for a
week or ten days during the coming hot weather, to visit Katar
and endeavour to get the treaty pet* put through,

This volume contains part 3 of the subject 'Persia Gulf'. It concerns a treaty between Britain and El Katr (also spelled Katar in the file) [Qatar].

In a copy of a telegram to the Secretary of State for India, dated 13 August 1913, the Viceroy of India acknowledges the former's wish to negotiate a treaty as soon as Britain's convention with the Turkish government comes into force [the Anglo-Ottoman Convention of 1913, which was never ratified]. However, the Viceroy suggests that, following the recent death of Shaikh Jasim [Shaikh Jāsim bin Muḥammad Āl Thānī, Ruler of Qatar], any action should be deferred until his successor, Shaikh Abdullah [Shaikh ‘Abdullāh bin Jāsim Āl Thānī], has established himself as ruler.
