FOREIGN OFFIGS, S.W.l*
25th September, 1926.
1
Sir,
I am directed by Secretary Sir Austen Chamberlain to
9
acknowledge the receipt of your letter No. C.16105/26 of
September 16th, regarding the proposed revision of tne treaty
with Ibn Saud, and concerning a communication to be sent to
Ibn Saud relative to aerial services in tne Hejaz, in tne
sense agreed upon by the Conference held at the Colonial Office
on August lltn.
2. Sir Austen Chamberlain concurs in the proposal for a furthei
interdepartmental conference to discuss the draft treaty, at
which tne acting British Agent and Consul ax Jeddah should be
invited to attend. Mr. Jordan has now arrived in this
country, and I am to suggest that the proposed conference should
take place during the week beginning on October 5ru. Sir
Austen Chamberlain also concurs in the replies which Mr.
Secretary Amery proposes to send to His Majesty's High
Commissioners for Palestine and Iraq, as set forth in
paragraph 4 and in the first part of paragraph 5 of your letter.
'i‘he Secretary of State considers, however, that it would not
be advisable to communicate to the
Transjordan
Used in three contexts: the geographical region to the east of the River Jordan (literally ‘across the River Jordan’); a British protectorate (1921-46); an independent political entity (1946-49) now known as Jordan
and Ira 4
governments a copy of the draft treaty. It seems preferable
to inform them that the text of the. Treaty, if and when signed,
will immediately be communicated to them, aaaing an assurance
that it will contain nothing to the prejudice of tnose two
countries. This course is suggested because tne Secretary
of State anticipates some difficulty in inducing Ibn Saud to
accept the treaty as drafted, and it may be founa necessary
to
Ihe Und er-Secretary o f State,
Colonial Office.
