this is neoeeeary. A transhipment et Ba^hdud where most
of the traffic will originate or terminate *ill not be a
#reat inoonwenienoe # while a break of aranffe at Hillah would
s-erioualy reduce the efficiency of the Basra-Baghdad line.
Moreover this plan will ^ive for the time bein*
a continuous metre w.ee line from Basrah to khanikln. It
will also enable us to concentrate into one central workshop
at Baghdad all Locomotive^ and Carriage and V«a*on work both
standard and metre gauge.
2bere can be no doubt that the cost of a
transhipment yard at Hillah, the annual cofcit of transhipment
itself, and the maintenance of separate metre gauge Loco
Chops on the Basrah-Hilluh system, would cost more than the
conversion of the Baghdad-Hillah line and its eventual
re-conversion to standard gauge.
The conversion of the Baghdad-Hillah line will if
possible bo carried out so that it will be complete by the time
the Ur-Hillah link is finished.
Terminal metre gauge station at Baghdad.

It is proposed to locate this alongside the
standard gauge station of the Baghdad-Samarrah line, and the
General layout of the station yard, transhipment yard and
engine ehed is being based on the aswuumtion that both
standard snd metre gauge lines will be under the tame
ariminiutration. Should the existing Baghdad*Sararr&h line
be under u separate administration it might be necessary to
modify the arrangements proposed.
*he station yard with the Loco bhed &o will be
carried out simultaneously with (2) and {3) above.
