The item consists of copies and extracts of correspondence, minutes and resolutions cited in, or enclosed with, letters to and from the Government of Bombay From c. 1668-1858, the East India Company’s administration in the city of Bombay [Mumbai] and western India. From 1858-1947, a subdivision of the British Raj. It was responsible for British relations with the Gulf and Red Sea regions. .

The item relates to the appointment of Claudius James Rich to the position of Resident at Bagdad [Baghdad]; the importance of maintaining a positive relationship with the Resident of Bussorah [Basra]; Rich’s chief object of establishing secure channels of communication between England and India through the central location of Bagdad. In particular, the discussions centre on the previous service of Rich and whether he is entitled to emoluments and a higher allowance as Resident. The uniqueness of the office of Political Resident A senior ranking political representative (equivalent to a Consul General) from the diplomatic corps of the Government of India or one of its subordinate provincial governments, in charge of a Political Residency. - and how the clause does not apply to this office - is also mentioned.
