29. Further, the Regulations under which half and
quarter rations were issued to the wives and children of
European soldiers during the time the latter are separated
from their families by reason of the exigencies of the
public service have been extended to the families of men
serving on the Unattached List who may be similarly
separated.
30. A similar indulgence has also been granted in the
case of wives and families of soldiers separated from the
latter owing to either the soldier or his family being sent to
a convalescent depot.
31. Attention has been drawn to the undue casting

and the adoption of precautionary
measures might have been greatly reduced, if not entirely
prevented. Improper stable management and lax supervi
sion, defective line gear, bad grooming, and unnecessary
exposure of the horses have contributed greatly to their
diminished efficiency. These important considerations have
been pointed out, and a hope is entertained that the next
annual report by the Principal Veterinary Surgeon will
exhibit still more favourable results.
32. The good economy of the Superintending Vet
erinary Department continues to show itself by a notable
difference in favour of Bombay over the average castings
and deaths in the Bengal and Madras presidencies.
33. The successful efforts which have been made

to the establishment of Work
shops in British regiments afford abundant proof that the
European tradesmen of the Army evince a just appreciation
of those efforts by their praiseworthy exertions in the pur
suit of useful and profitable employment.
