A treatise on knowledge, and on the value, classification and study of the sciences and the required qualities of the scholar, in seven sections (باب), by Abū Ḥāmid Muḥammad ibn Muḥammad al-Ṭūsī al-Ghazzāli (أبو حامد محمد بن محمد الطوسي الغزّالي), also known as al-Ghazālī (الغزالي, latinised as Algazel, ca 1058-1111).

The copy was completed on 7 Shawwāl 833/29 June 1430 by the scribe Muḥammad ibn Ḥasan (محمد بن حسن, see colophon Section at the end of a manuscript text. , f. 49r, lines 13-17, transcribed below).

F. 28v is blank.

Content:

  • Section one on the merit of knowledge (الباب الأول في فضيلة العلم, ff. 1v-5v);
  • Section two on the rectitude of the intention to seek knowledge (الباب الثاني في تصحيح النية في طلب العلم, ff. 5v-12r);
  • Section three on the most erudite scholars (الباب الثالث في العلامات الفاضلة, ff. 12r-23v);
  • Section four on the important sciences and their branches (الباب الرابع في العلوم المهمة وأقسامها, ff. 23v-32v);
  • Section five on conditions and defects of argumentation (الباب الخامس في الشروط المناظرة وآفاتها, ff. 32v-38v);
  • Section six on the proper comportment of the teacher and the student (الباب السادس في آداب المعلم والمتعلم, ff. 38v-43v);
  • Section seven on what scholars are allowed to take from rulers' money (الباب السابع فيما يحل للعلماء أخذه من أموال السلاطين, ff. 43v-49r).

Begins (f. 1v, lines 2-4):

الحمد لله الذي بذكره يفتتح كل كتاب والصلوة والسلام على رسوله الذي

بالصلوة عليه يختتم كل خطاب وعلى آله وأصحابه الذين بأنوارهم ينجلي عن وجه الحق

كل سحاب وينكشف كل حجاب...

Ends (f. 49r, lines 8-10):

...فقال لو أخذ رجل بيدي فأدخلني الجنة

ثط عصى ربه ما أحبه قلبي لأن سخره للأخذ بيدي هو الذي أبغضه

لأجله شكرًا له على تستحيره إياه...
