A manual on the principles of navigational theory by Sulaymān ibn Aḥmad ibn Sulaymān al-Mahrī (سليمان بن أحمد بن سليمان المهري, fl. 16th century), here called al-Muḥammadī (المحمدي), an Indian Ocean navigator from the city of al-Shiḥr (الشحر), Yemen. The treatise is arranged in seven parts (أبواب).

This copy was completed on 15 Jumādá II 1153/7 September 1740 at Ṣuḥār (صحار, in the Sultanate of Oman) by ‘Abd Allāh ibn Aḥmad al-Ma‘qilī al-Sa‘dī (عبد الله بن أحمد المعقلي السعدي; see colophon Section at the end of a manuscript text. , f. 5r, lines 16-18, transcribed below).

الحمد لله رب العالمين والصلاة والسلام على سيدنا محمد النبي

بن عبد الله سيد الأولين والآخرين وعىل آله وأصحبه أجمعين

أما بعد فهذا كتاب لطيف حجمه كثير علمه في أصول علم البحر

أخذ علم كل مكان من أهله فهو من أصح من أخذه من الغير

إلا أن كان الغير قد جربه وهو ممن يعتد به في الفن أو كان

ذلك الغير مجربًا محققًا وصاحب المكان قليل المعرفة بالفن

فمن المحقق أصح وبالله التوفيق وهو حسبنا ونعم الوكيل
