the western. It is in lat. 25° 47' 5" N, long. 57° 20' 10' E. The sound'-
ings from Ras Ayshecr t0 this cape are from twenty to ^ faihom
the coast is safe to approach to the distance of a mile.
Rocky Shoal, or Ternate's Shoal.

hundred yards over, with a fathom and a half water on it, and sound-
ings of seven to four and a half fathoms within it, and three to ten
without it, stiff clay bottom. It is in lat. 25° long. 57° 29' 20"

Quoin Hill.
A remarkable quoin-shaped hill lies in lat. 25° 49|'N., long. 57° 43' E.

It belongs to the Imanm of Muskat, and horses and several sorts of dry
nut, as well as ghee and some cotton, are exported from it The
soundings Measurements of the depth of a body of water. in the bay from Ras-ool-Khore, except what have been de
scribed, are from seven to eight and four fathoms ; the anchorage off the
town is in five fathoms; the fort N. 43° E., Quoin Hill N, true bearings.
Ras Jask, or Cape Jask.
® a T S Jask or Cape Jask is a low projecting rocky point, in lat. 25° 37'
oo . ., on g-•-'7 4/ 10" E. It has a small ruin on it, and there are
some remarkable banian Merchant of Indian extraction. trees about three miles inland. Four miles on
the western side from the piteli of the eape is a salt-water creek, running
into a sort of lagoon, about eight or nine miles within. There is a
narrow channel over the banks at its entrance, with six feet water;
within are from one and a half to three fathoms. On the western side of
the cape is a flat, with three and four fathoms on it, shoaling off
gia uaMy to ten and twenty, but no danger if attention is paid to the
ead. l ie anchorage off Jask Town is good in a south-easter, while
that on the eastern side the cape, and close in shore, is of the very best
in a north-wester. You lay half a mile offshore in five or six fathoms,
r f ,! L h,gh - Wa, . er at 5h - 50 ™- Ml and change; rise of tide about
nve ieet. l he variation in 1829 was 2° 40' W.

The volume contains an abstract of contents on p. iii, a detailed list of contents on pp. vii-xx, an alphabetical index on pp. xxi-xxvii, and a list of maps etc on p. xviii.

Physical characteristics

Pagination: two separate pagination sequences are present in the volume. The first sequence (pp. i-xviii) commences at the first page and terminates at the list of maps (p. xviii). A second pagination sequence then takes over (pp. 1-688), commencing at the title page and terminating at the final page. Both these pagination sequences are printed, with additions in pencil, and the numbers are found at the top (left, right or centre) of each page.

The fold-outs in this volume were not paginated by the publisher. As a result, these have been foliated using the nearest page number. For example, the fold-out attached to p.51 has been numbered as 51A.
