SLAVE TRADE.
on behalf of the Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and
Ireland, her heirs and successors, have agreed upon and concluded
ihe following Articles :—
A rticle T.
H is Highness the Sultan of Muskat hereby engages to prohibit,
under the severest penalties, the export of slaves from his African
dominions, and to issue orders to his officers to prevent and suppress
such trade.
A rticle II.
His Highness the Sultan of Muslfat further engages to prohibit*
under the severest penalties, the importation of slaves from any part of
Africa into his possessions in Asia; and to use his utmost influence
with all the Chiefs of Arabia, the Red Sea, and the Persian Gulf The historical term used to describe the body of water between the Arabian Peninsula and Iran. , in like
manner to prevent the introduction of slaves from Africa into their res
pective territories.
A rticle III.
His Highness the Sultan of Muskat grants to the ships of Her
Majesty's Navy, as well as to those of the East India Company, per
mission to seize and confiscate any vessels, Ihe property of His Highness
or of his subjects, carrying on Slave Trade, excepting only such as are
engaged in the transport of slaves from one port to another of his own
dominions in Africa, between the port of Lamoo to the north, and its
dependencies, the northern limit of which is the north point of Kaghoo
Island, in 1° 57 / (one degree and fifty-seven minutes) south latitude,
and the port of Keelwa to the south, and its dependencies, the southern
limit of which is the Souga Munara, or Pagoda Point, in 9° 2' (nine
degrees and two minutes) south latitude, including the islands of
Zanzibar, Pemba, and Monfea.
A rticle IV.
This Agreement to commence and have effect from the 1st day of
January 1S47 (one thousand eight hundred and forty-seven) of the year
of Christ, and the 15th day of the month of Mohurum 1263 (twelve
hundred and sixty-three) of the Hijree.
Done at Zanzibar, this 2nd (second) day of October 1845 (one thousand
, eight hundred and forty-five) of the year of Christ, and 29th day/ of
Rumzan 1261 (twelve hundred and sixty-one) of the Hijree.

The volume contains an abstract of contents on p. iii, a detailed list of contents on pp. vii-xx, an alphabetical index on pp. xxi-xxvii, and a list of maps etc on p. xviii.

Physical characteristics

Pagination: two separate pagination sequences are present in the volume. The first sequence (pp. i-xviii) commences at the first page and terminates at the list of maps (p. xviii). A second pagination sequence then takes over (pp. 1-688), commencing at the title page and terminating at the final page. Both these pagination sequences are printed, with additions in pencil, and the numbers are found at the top (left, right or centre) of each page.

The fold-outs in this volume were not paginated by the publisher. As a result, these have been foliated using the nearest page number. For example, the fold-out attached to p.51 has been numbered as 51A.
