About this item

Content

Letter enclosing a memorandum of his public service which the Baronetage and Knightage and Sir Bartle had both previously requested and explaining its incompleteness owing to loss of his papers in travels and accidents.

The letter goes on to recount his current travels including his camp's arrival outside Jodhpore [Jodhpur] and his ceremonial public entrance that evening which is to take place on an elephant and Pelly's observations on the fashions of the Maharajah and the court on such occasions which has been worn since the zenith of the Mogul Empire.

The letter continues with the recent rains and prosperous crops in the region, his satisfaction with his organization of the Rajpootana [Rājasthān] agency An office of the East India Company and, later, of the British Raj, headed by an agent. and his ongoing sternness with the Chief Commissioner owing to the 'lack of industry or genius' of his deputy.

The letter concludes with discussion on the Central Asia question, some questions for Frere on the political situation in England with regard to the European powers and whether England is an impregnable Empire.

The letter also encloses two memorandums which Pelly thinks may be of interest to Sir George Clerk.

Neither these nor the memorandum mentioned earlier are enclosed with the letter.
