The file consists almost entirely of published amendments to the Manual of Instructions to Officers of the Political Department of the Government of India , 1924 edition. The amendments referred to in the file were published 1927-1929, 1937-1939 and 1945. They were forwarded to the Political Agent A mid-ranking political representative (equivalent to a Consul) from the diplomatic corps of the Government of India or one of its subordinate provincial governments, in charge of a Political Agency. , Bahrain by the Secretary to the Political Resident A senior ranking political representative (equivalent to a Consul General) from the diplomatic corps of the Government of India or one of its subordinate provincial governments, in charge of a Political Residency. in the Persian Gulf The historical term used to describe the body of water between the Arabian Peninsula and Iran. , in 1928-1940 and 1946, for insertion in the office copy of the Manual that was maintained and kept up to date by the Bahrain Agency An office of the East India Company and, later, of the British Raj, headed by an agent. . As a result, the few amendments remaining on file are from 1929, 1937-1939, 1945 and relate to: dress code, etiquette, recruitment, leave of absence and the Official Secrets Acts.

The file also contains a circular letter dated 13 March 1948 from the Office of the Accountant-General, Central Revenues (AGCR), New Delhi about payment authorisations.

Arrangement

File papers are arranged chronologically. They are followed by two unnumbered folios of file notes, which include a chronological list of documents in the file dated 1939 onwards (folios 38-55), together with their document reference and folio numbers, to help identify and locate them in the file.

Physical characteristics

There is one complete foliation sequence from the first full folio of writing (after the front cover and the title page) until the last folio of writitng. This sequence is numbered in pencil and uncircled, in the top right corner of each folio. There is an incomplete sequence in red crayon. Anomalies: f 31a, ff 47a-47b. Folios 31 and 37 are folder over along the bottom edge.
