Gohud, I was fully appris Excel-
^ hncy's despatch to Gener
1803. In reply to Bappoo Wittul, I particularly reminded
him that General Wellesley had remarked that the Maha
Rajah Dowiut Rao Scindiah was liable to lose Gohud by
the ninth article of the Treaty, and of his having refused to
admit the river Chumbul as a boundary, or to insert any
thing in the Treaty which should tend to defeat the arrange
ments which might have been made by your Excellency
with the Rana of Gohud. [ have lost no opportunity of sup
porting and vindicating the rights of the British Govern
ment to contract and maintain the engagements which it
has entered into with the Rana of Gohud. I shall in one or
two days, I hope, be admitted to the honour of an interview
with the Maha Rajah Dowiut Rao Scindiah,* when I shall
give him a fall statement in writing of the grounds on
which is founded the right of the British Government to
maintain the Treaty with the Rana of Gohud."
The Governor-General in Council never for a moment
admitted the pretensions set up by Scindiah,-)- as is fully
Vv " established by the fact that on the 2d March 1804, in for
warding the ratified Treaty to the Commander-in-chief, Lord
Lake, for delivery to the Rana of Gohud, his Excellency
stated—" Your Excellency has been apprised of the decided
opinion of the Oovernor-General in Council, that the terms
of the late Treaty of Peace with Dowiut Rao Scindiah
cannot he considered to invalidate the engagements of the
nature of those concluded by your Excellency with the
Rana of Gohud, the tenor of these engagements being en
tirely approved by the Governor-General in Council."
The ratified Treaty^; was accordingly made over in the
most solemn manner to the Rana of Gohud by his Excellency
the Commander-in-chief, Lord Lake, and thus the Rana was
secured by the British Government in the possession of his
Highness's hereditary possessions.
