About this item

Content

Letter regarding arrangements for an extension of the Electric Telegraph from Baghdad to Bassorah [Basra] and then via the Persian Gulf The historical term used to describe the body of water between the Arabian Peninsula and Iran. to Kurrachee [Karachi] and discussing this route as a more commercially and politically viable one than through the Red Sea where the telegraph has ruptured several times since installation.

The letter goes on to discuss a proposal which was put to Lord Palmerston and Lord John Russell for a system to protect the telegraph line from Seistan [Sīstān] to Bagdad [Baghdad] which would potentially also have the benefit of producing a body of men, paid for and supported by the English Government in a useful position should any military situations arise.

The letter then goes on to discuss an idea for a tram-road from Tabreez [Tabriz] to Teheran [Tehran] which he has proposed to Mr Edwin Clark, Railway Engineer and his bankers. In depth details are provided on the concessions that were agreed with Turkey for a tram-road between Belgrade and Constantinople and how similar concessions would be required with Persia for such a scheme to be implemented, but that a larger guarantee would be required for somewhere so far away from Britain in order to persuade bankers and the Public to subscribe to it.
