The conversation included questions relating to Herat and Afghanistan following Pelly's political proceedings there, and the Viceroy's approval of Pelly's suggestion on how they should be resolved.

Also discussed was the question of Pelly's future, during which Pelly was shown a telegram from Sir George Clerk offering him the acting appointment of consular agent at Zanzibar, which he proposed to accept.
