representatives were very reluctant to agree
to any specific safeguard for the political
interests involved or for the position of
the Sheikh in the clause, and the suggestion
was made that it might be possible to meet
the difficulties felt by the interested
Departments of His Majesty's Government by an
exchange of letters in which the Company would
undertake to give all due deference to the
views of His Majesty's Government and the
Sheikh in the exercise of their rights
under this article. To this we understood
that the Company's representatives agreed
and so long as it is understood that the
point will be covered in a separate agreement
between the Company and His ZJajesty's
Government we do not wish to press for its
insertion here,
