a ridge called Imam Dlvanza, similar to Jebel Kuskhi
(In front of this ridge a ruined village in 1888.) Track
follows bed of stream. Wheat and barley grown on
plain without irrigation. Continue down plain and cross
one branch of the Darkhaneh Eiver, flowing over
several small channels in a gravelly bed 150 yds. wide •

plantations along bed. (The ' main post road' from
Jeaghdad to Mosul was met near here in 1888. Eoad
described in fioute 25 a, m. 107-117 runs on other side of
Kum ou valley.) Cross main bed of Darkhaneh river
flowing in several channels; bed gravelly, 400 vds!
broad. Pass Eski Kufri on low gravelly mounds 2 m
to 1. Cross wide bed of Kufri Su (Chechepan). Good
wheat and barley crops in the plain. Pass another
branch of stream 300 yds. broad. Water in several
channels among banks of shingle most of it led off into
irrigation cuts.

calculated at the rate of about 3-3^ m. an hour, but at somewhat

This volume is A Handbook of Mesopotamia, Volume III, Central Mesopotamia with Sourthern Kurdistan and the Syrian Desert (Admiralty War Staff Intelligence Division, January, 1917), covering the Tigris and Euphrates from Baghdad and Fellūjeh [Fallujah] to Mosul and Meskeneh [Maskanah], the Lesser Zāb, the country east of the Tigris towards the Persian frontier, and the routes running westward from the Euphrates valley across the Syrian Desert. The volume was prepared on behalf of the Admiralty and War Office, and appears to be based on official and unofficial publications and maps which are cited in a bibliographical section in the volume. This volume was supplemented with corrections and additions in June 1918 (see IOR/L/MIL/17/15/41/5).
