10. It w-as knovm that ^>heikh Saied was friendly with the
Bedouin and that he had paid them considerable subsidies, ^.re-
surably in order to ensure their su^ort on just such an
occasion as this.

it seeaed very doubtful whether Sheikh Saied would consent to
resign quietly from such in apparently strong position, and it
seemed probable therefore that if Sheikh Mana and his sup oruers
persisted in their claims that fighting would break out in the
