The letter is responding to a communication from the Resident dated 30 June 1852 (No. 5), which reported the 'paucity of vessels in the Persian Gulf The historical term used to describe the body of water between the Arabian Peninsula and Iran. '. In response, it states that the Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Navy has been ordered to endeavour to strengthen the squadron during the season that 'slavers are expected', and to return the HC Schooner Constance to the Gulf as soon as possible.
