About this record
- Content
Letter regarding the appointments of Captain Miles, formerly in Aden, to the post at Gwadur [Gwadar] and Captain Charles Grant, formerly on the Arab coast, as Second Assistant at Bushire, but with instructions to stop at Gwadur and take charge there until Captain Miles arrives.
The letter also informs Pelly that there had been some problems with the Telegraph at Gwadur and that Merewether had received permission from the Governor to send Edward Charles Ross there to resolve it, and that therefore Captain Grant will be joining Pelly directly rather than going to Gwadur.
The letter concludes by discussing the British Government's decision to recognise Torkee [Turki bin Said] as Sultan of Muscat and its acknowledgement of Syud Salim [Salim II bin Thuwaini]'s time in charge of the Sultanate; it also reports on rumours that Abdoolla [Abdallah ibn Faisal ibn Turki al Sa'ud]] has given in to Saood [Saud ibn Faisal ibn Turki al Sa'ud] and that if true there will no longer be any need for Turkish troops to be in Wahabee [Wahhabi] territory, unless they intend to try and compel Saood to acknowledge the Sovereignty of the Porte (Council of the Ottoman Empire).
