Letter referring to the position of affairs at Muskat [Muscat] and enclosing letters on the matter which contain instructions for Pelly to undertake:

  • Letter No. 65 of 1866 from Charles Gonne, Secretary to Government, Bombay to the Secretary to the Government of India in the Foreign Department, Simla, 4 April 1866 stating that the British Government cannot have a cordial friendship and alliance with Sayed Soulem [Salim II bin Thuwaini] whilst the allegation of murder remains unrefuted and that they must refuse to recognise him as even de-facto ruler. The letter goes on to detail the content of the initial reply given to the envoys of Sayed Soulem at Bombay and outlines the areas that the still need assurances in.
  • Extract of Paragraphs: twelve to twenty-three of a minute by His Excellency the Governer, agreed by the India Office The department of the British Government to which the Government of India reported between 1858 and 1947. The successor to the Court of Directors. board, dated 2 April 1866 stating that the security of the telegraph stations at Gwadar and Mussendoom [Musandam] must be ensured; that piracy be prevented from reviving; the need for gun boats in the area to support the security of the telegraph and arrangements to cover for Lt Edward Charles Ross's absence from Muskat [Muscat].
