About this record

Content

A work on the principles of specific gravity probably falsely attributed to the mathematician Euclid of Alexandria (Εὐκλείδης; أقليدس; fl. 300 BC). The translation, presumabely from the Greek now lost, is said to have been corrected by Thābit ibn Qurrah (ثابت ابن قرة; d. 901; f. 98v, line 3, transcribed below). Two fragmentary Latin translations of roughly the first half of this treatise (up to about the end of f. 99v) exists under the title De ponderoso (or gravi ) et levi et de comparatione corporum ad invicem , and was first published under the title De levi et ponderoso ( Euclidis elementorum geometricorum lib. XV ... , Bartholomeo Zamberto, ed. et trans., 1537, pp. 585-86; Euclidis qu æ supersunt omnia , David Gregory, ed. and trans., 1703, pp. 685-86; and for a comparason of the two Latin translations see Maximilian Curtze, 'Zwei Beiträge zur Geschichte der Physik im Mittelalter', 1900, pp. 51-54).

This copy lacks the diagrams.

Ends (f. 101r, lines 8-11):
