Translation of a letter from Sheikh Sagar bin Khaled,
Chief of Shargah, to Colonel Ross,

writing
The object of/this letter is firstly greeting and
secondly to Inquire after your health. May you ever be
favoured with all what is good. On these parts the movements
are quiet and the affirs are satisfactory by the grace of
God.
We sent you a letter previoxisly but no reply has come
from you and we do not know what it was that has prevented it
We hope it a propitious one. Further, the condition which
has already been arranged between us and Sheikh Salim through
the medium of the Sheikhs Homeid bin Abdullah and Hashar bin
Maktoom is not hidden from you. On the present date, there
took place an assembly of the aforesaid Sheikhs with us and
they asked Salim for adherence in accordance with the arrange
ment existing between us and himj and they did not gain the
object from him but withdrew what had been undertaken by them
for him and acquitted us of the guarantee which they had
given for us and to us. And the condition which (existed)
between us and Salim has been disturbed at present. You know
that he is residing at Bu Musa Island, which as you know,
belongs to Shargah and perhaps mischiefs will emanate from
him and evil doings. Firstly he will disturb the Maritime
peace for the reason that he is residing in the island.
Secondly, as we have mentioned to you, it is a dependency
of Shargah and is our town and we will not grant it to any
one. And you have information about it, and its affairs are
not hidden from you. We request you to warn Sheikh Salim
that if he desires to dwell at Bu Muea a guarantee should be
forth-coming
