Communications Bahrain is a regular halt of Imperial
Airways and is 4 days distant from London "by Air and li from
Karachi.
Ships of the British India Steam Navigation Company call
at Bahrain every v;eek and maintain a regular servicb from
Bahrain to Basrah all Gulf ports, Karachi and Bombay.
Passports'. It is not sufficient for a passport to he made
valid for Bahrain. It must hear a visa to he obtained from
the Passport Office in London. Visas are not ordinarly
granted as there exist no amenities for tourists or travellers
such as hotels and rest houses.
Travel facilities: There is a branch of the Mesopotamia
Persia Corporation Limited in Bahrain who are agents for the
principal Shipping Companies and Imperial Airways.
Bank ; There is a branch of the Eastern Bank Limited under a
European Manager. The local currency is the Indian Rupee.
Customs: Except on drugs spirits, wines and firearms, there
is no restriction on imports and exports of all kinds. luty
varies from 5% to 15% ad valorem.
Alcohol: Bahrain is officially a t dry t state. The Ruler,
however, has made certain exemptions for Europeans which can
be ascertained from His Britannic Majesty's political Agent A mid-ranking political representative (equivalent to a Consul) from the diplomatic corps of the Government of India or one of its subordinate provincial governments, in charge of a Political Agency. .
Shops: The ^suq.' (market) and its trade are expanding
and there are several firmn in keen competition from whom
all the principal tinned food stores can be purchased at
prices in general below those of India. Most household
articles are obtainable locally.
