The other Propofals were of le(s Importance in particular,
only their Number render'd 'em confiderable. But the
look'd upon thefe Demands to be fo extravagant, nay fo ridi
culous, that the Prime Minifters believ'd, or elf& pretended
to believe, that the King fought only an Occafion to break
with his Highnefs. Thereupon the fent to know of the
Ambaflador, Whether he had any Letter from the Emperor
of France directed to the Grand or Him, which con-
tain'd thofe Propofals, fet down in the Memorial which he
had deliver'd in his Majefties Name. For that he could ne
ver think the Emperor of France would ever give Order to
make fuch Propofals to the (port,fo exorbitant, and fo remote
fromReafon and Juftice in his Own Name, unlefs he faw em
exprefly written in any Letter under his Majefties Hand.
M. de Nointel taking no farther notice of the Demand,
return'd only for anfwer, That he had Letters of Credence
from his Mafter for the Grand and the Vi%ier y
which was fufficient, for that his Majefty did not ufe to write
about Bufinefs himfelf. And therefore that the was un
der a miftake to queftion the Mind and Intentions of the Em
peror of France, becaufe it was not Ihown in Writing under
his Majefties Hand. True it is, that the Amballador fpoke
Reafon, and the Impediment pretended by the was
only a Litigious Nicety. However, notwithftanding all that
M. de Nointel could fay or alledge to the contrary, he would
not grant him Audience, till he promis'd and engag d to fend
for a Letter from the King that fliould contain precifely the
fame things that were fet down in his Memorial, and that the
Letter fhould come in fix Months.
