Philosophical treatise on the soul (known in Latin as the De anima ) by Abū ‘Alī al-Ḥusayn ibn ‘Abd Allāh (أبو علي الحسين بن عبد الله), known as Ibn Sīnā (ابن سينا, latinised as Avicenna, d. ca 1037), extracted from his philosophical encyclopaedia the Kitāb al-shifā’ (كتاب الشفاء).

The treatise is divided into ten sections, the last of which is defective at the end in this copy.

Begins (f. 179r, lines 4-6):

قال خير المبادي ما زيّن بالحمد لواهب القوة على جميع حمده والصلاة على محمد

نبيه وعبده وآله الطاهرين من بعده وبعد فلو لا أن العادة قد جرب للأصاغر

الأبساط إلى الأكابر لاستعجمت عليهم سبيل الاعتصام ...

Ends (defective; f. 198v, lines 23-26):

... وكانت الاشغال

البدنية من فكرتها وأجزائها وأفراحها وأشواقها تعوق القوة عن الاتصال

به فلا يتصل به إلا برفض جميع هذه القوى وغلبتها وليس شيء يمنعها من

دوام الاتصال إلى البدن فإنها إذا فارقت البدن لم تزل متصلة بكلمة
