Changes and Vicissitudes in Persia in Modem Times.
F or many centuries the Persians, who had
so long ruled over other nations and tribes,
fell under the dominion of more powerful
states. The Greeks, as we have seen in the
previous chapter, first obtained the ascendancy,
which they wielded for about a century, and
then the Parthians held them in vassalage for
nearly five hundred years. At the expiration
of that period Rome was gradually soaring to
lofty destinies, and Parthia declining in power
and importance. About a.d . 220, a successful
soldier, Ardisheer Babigan, usually called Ar-
taxerxes, wrested the sceptre from the feeble
grasp of the Parthians, founded the celebrated
Sassanian dynasty, which lasted nearly five
centuries, and thus in a certain degree restored
the Persian empire. Artaxerxes claimed to be
descended from the ancient race of Persian
monarchs, and assumed the title of " king of
