About this record
- Content
The letter is reporting the Resident's return to Bushire from Shiraz on 17 October 1824. It notes that during his return journey, the Resident received a letter of complaint from Shaikh Sallah bin Sugger, Acting Chief at Sharga [Sharjah], indicating that Salmeen bin Nasser, who was then residing at Debaye [Dubai], has seized boats belonging to Sharga.
The letter explains that this act does not appear to be piratical in nature, but the first step towards open warfare between the dependants of Muscat and Sharga. It is noted that the Resident has dispatched the HC Cruizer Benares to investigate, but he does think the chances of preventing further conflict looks good.
It informs the Bombay Government that it is the Resident's intention to travel to Muscat once the survey ships from Bombay have arrived at that port. From there, the Resident will commences his annual tour of the Arabian coast, and if open warfare has not broken out, he will offer his services as a mediator.
