Letter regarding the deteriorating condition of Jacob's eyesight; his response to recent accusations made against him and his decision to remove himself from the Persian medal rolls. The letter also informs Pelly of his intention of sending him copies of his order regarding the Persian War and regarding Pelly's interview with Lord Stanley.
Enclosed with the letter are the following:
- Letter from Ross Balfour Moore, Calcutta to John Jacob, 2 August 1858 regarding his health; news of plunderers and rebels on the road to Futtehpoor [Fatehpur]; a description of the villages on the banks of the Ganges; difficulties caused by steamers running aground; comparing the military styles of (General Nathaniel?) Forbes and [General Sir Edward] Lugard; his dislike of Calcutta; and Sir Colin Campbell's movements. Also enclosed is a duplicate copy of this letter which was sent directly to Lewis Pelly.

The letter on folios 210-215 has been written vertically down each folio and on reaching the end of folio 215v the writer The lowest of the four classes into which East India Company civil servants were divided. A Writer’s duties originally consisted mostly of copying documents and book-keeping. has turned the paper horizontally and written down folios 210-211.
