Content

Letter supplying the information requested by Sir William Merewether in relation to the regular force maintained by the Khan of Kelat [Kalāt]; and the allegiences of the Chiefs of Beloochistan [Baluchistan].

The letter details the strength and composition of the Khan's forces, details how revenues from his lands pay for their salaries and maintenance, and describes how they are deployed and what protection duties they could undertake.

Folio 43 contains tables relating to His Highness the Khan of Kelat's infantry, bodyguard, cavalry and artillery giving the numbers of individuals holding each rank within them, how much they are paid and how they receive this payment along with other relevant remarks.

Folios 43v to 44 give lists of both all the Sirdars Leader of a tribe or a polity; also refers to a military rank or title given to a commander of an army or division. who are well disposed towards His Highness, along with their caste and residence; and a separate list of those who are disaffected and have allied themseves with Sirdar Leader of a tribe or a polity; also refers to a military rank or title given to a commander of an army or division. Moolla Mahomed and the Jam of Beyla, again giving details of their caste and residence.

The heading to the letter contains a typing error, with Captain Harrison's middle initial being incorrectly given as W instead of H.
