This detailed maritime scene shows the experimental frigate Vernon at sea in the Persian Gulf The historical term used to describe the body of water between the Arabian Peninsula and Iran. in January 1834. In the background high, white cliffs are visible at left. A smaller boat, perhaps a dhow A term adopted by British officials to refer to local sailing vessels in the western Indian Ocean. , flies a red flag at left. The frigate flies a Red Ensign as well as a red pennant.
