The Continuation of the Bagdad Railway.
(Translation.)
“ ^ r ^ ls k e built after all! These words were originally uttered in reference to
another German undertaking, which came to grief so miserably ; but they may really
sately be applied to the Bagdad Railway. The proud work of civilisation which
german enterprise undertook to create in Turkey is to be completed. The last few
days have brought it considerably nearer realisation. Work on the Bulgurlu-El-Helif
section can, according to a report received yesterday from Director von Gwinner be
now begun. The continuation of the Bagdad Railway is assured.
In June IpOS’it seemed already to have reached this point. After years of
stagnation the signature of the conventions and financial agreements for the continuation
o the construction of the railway was arrived at at the end of May 1908 between the
representatives ol the Sultan and of the Bagdad Railway Company and the Deutsche
t an ^- The great outstanding difficulties were overcome and all financial obstacles
lemoved. Turkey placed at the disposal of the Bagdad Railway Company 227,000,000 fr
