The file contains correspondence relating to the activities of the Imperial Bank of Iran in Dubai. The principal correspondents are: the British Agency An office of the East India Company and, later, of the British Raj, headed by an agent. at Sharjah; the Political Agency An office of the East India Company and, later, of the British Raj, headed by an agent. at Bahrain; the Political Resident A senior ranking political representative (equivalent to a Consul General) from the diplomatic corps of the Government of India or one of its subordinate provincial governments, in charge of a Political Residency. in the Persian Gulf The historical term used to describe the body of water between the Arabian Peninsula and Iran. at Bushire (later, Bahrain); and representatives of the Imperial Bank of Iran in both Tehran and Dubai.

The papers cover the following matters:

  • the negotiations and final agreement for the opening of a bank branch in Dubai;
  • the lease of land for the new bank building;
  • the change of name to the British Bank of Iran and the Middle East in August 1949.

The file also contains brief reports on the bank's activities for the years 1948 and 1949, written by the manager, M P Stott.

Folios 6-10 are a copy of the agreement between the bank and the ruler of Kuwait, upon which the Dubai agreement was based. Folios 14-25 are the final Dubai agreement, in triplicate.
