2. These assurances, in the form originally sanctioned
by Government, contained a reference to cue co-operation
expected from the Shaikh in the event of its being needed in
connection with the capture ot Basrah. The Dhaikii urged tacit
as occasion did not arise for the fulfilment of this ooligation
it seemed somewhat inconvenient and superfluous xoi iu to ^e
mentioned in a communication which would become an important
•nermanent record; he therefore begged for a revisea letter
from which the passages relating to Basrah should be omitted.
