NEWS FROM BERLIN SENT THROUGH THE WIRELESS STATIONS OF THE
GERMAN GOVERNMENT.
GERMAN EMBASSY, WASHINGTON.
Anglo-Russian relations and rivalries in Persia are most
curiously illustrated by a letter written in the midst of the
world war by Sir Walter Townley, the British Minister in
Teheran, to the English Consul Genera,!, Shiras^O'Connor. Sir
Walter, who is now British Minister in Holland, relates on
April 7th, 1915, the causes for his removal from his Persian
post and exposes the aims of Russian intrusive policy of
expansion in Persia. The letter is now published by the
Norddeutsche .Allgemeine Zeitung, which hints that still
similar documents are in hands of the German Authorities.
"Well, my time in Persia is coming repidly to an end and in
little more than a week I turn my face homeward and the so-
called land of the rose will see me no more. I am going home
on leave granted me in the most encouraging language, but
without having asked for it and because Korostovetz and I
could not hit it off. Who could hit it off with poor old
Korostovetz? Anyhow I am going and of course I am nominally
going on leave. I have been expecting this termination to my
sojourn in Persia for some time, almost ever since I came here
because I felt sure that our friends on the banks of the Neva
would get tired of somebody who could not sit down and see
them quietly absorb all Persia. Azerbaijan was bad enough but
not nearly sufficient for to lay hands on fars
through the same channel as they had tried to incorporate
Isfahan in their sphere of complete control which
