The distance from one side to the other is about 3 miles, the road alter
nately ascending and descending, but on the whole it is an easy pass and
s with a little work at one or two points could easily be made passable
' for guns. According to Grey there would be no difficulty in cutting a
road, with gradients not exceeding ^ 0 n the side of the hills running
down from the kutal.
Note. This appears to be the same kutal which Jennings describes
under the name of Shikarabad Kutal.—(Aa^n'er, 1899 ; Grey, 1905.)

BAZMAN Elev. Wood)
A village in the Bampur district of Persian Baluchistan, 29 miles from
the Khadreh-i-Zindeh Kuh, as the main peak of the Kuh-i-Bazman is term-
ed, 48 miles from Bampur and 54 from Fehruj. It is supplied by two
kdrlzes, one coming from a warm spring, and the other from numerous
springs, below the village.
The village consists of the ruins of two forts and some 80 houses
and huts, most of the families being away in the plains in the winter, but
there are at least 200 in the spring time. There is an extensive date
grove and numerous fruit trees, with a considerable amount of
cultivation.
The stone fort was built by Mirza Khan, son of Haidar Khan of Is
fahan, about two centuries ago, and when the Persians re-conquered Balu
chistan it was so strong that it could not be captured until artillery was
brought to bear on it. Below the village are the remains of an “ Infidel’s
fort, but there is no evidence forthcoming as to its origin.
The inhabitants of Bazma n are principally KarTamzai & and Sammi.

Fair crops of wheat, barley, jowari, cotton
and beans are grown, also onions, turnips,
melons, and radishes.
Fine old mulberry, walnut, fig, lime, pomegranate and apricot trees are

dates of three sorts, viz. :—
(1) SJiang GWMAa.—There are some 400 trees of this sort; they
yield a hardish-skinned sweet date which grows at the top
of the tree. They are considered the best for export as they
keep longer and retain their sweetness better.
(2) Muzawati or Miazabti. Large, soft, golden dates of superior
quality. r
(3) Hazarat .—Large yellow species.
The Magas, Fehruj and Bazman dates all have the reputation of being
the best in Persian Baluchistan, both in size and flavour. The best trees
yield from 30 to 50 seers. In the month of March or the end of February,

The item is Volume IV of the four-volume Gazetteer of Persia (1910 edition).

The volume comprises that portion of Persia south and east of the Bandar Abbas-Kirman-Birjand to Gazik line, with the exception of Sistan, 'which is dealt with in the Military Report on Persian Sistan'. It also includes the islands of Qishm, Hormuz, Hanjam, Larak etc. in the Persian Gulf The historical term used to describe the body of water between the Arabian Peninsula and Iran. and the whole district of Shamil.

The gazetteer includes entries on villages, towns, administrative divisions, districts, provinces, tribes, halting-places, religious sects, mountains, hills, streams, rivers, springs, wells, dams, passes, islands and bays. The entries provide details of latitude, longitude, and elevation for some places, and information on history, communications, agriculture, produce, population, health, water supply, topography, climate, military intelligence, coastal features, ethnography, trade, economy, administration and political matters.

Information sources are provided at the end of each gazetteer entry, in the form of an author or source’s surname, italicised and bracketed.

The volume contains an index map, dated July 1909, on folio 323.
