confidential letter received yesterday from our acting chief manager in Tehran in
reference to the Mint, which my directors thought might interest you.

“ MINT.
. Russian Legation tried to prevent the 100 ; 000L silver, which we have recently
received, being coined. Ihe British Minister took the matter up firmly, and pointed
out that the silver had been ordered before the present attempt of the Russian Bank to
get the Mint had taken shape, and that there could be no question of stopping or
delaying the minting of it.
I have pointed out to the Persian authorities that our contract is more favourable
to them than the Russian one, in so far as the Russian Bank has not got an office in
London, and would have to pay a banker’s commission there of about \ per cent., with
which they would be quite entitled to charge the Persian Government under the terms
of the proposed contract.”
