About this item

Content

This file, which consists of copies of Foreign Office correspondence, concerns relations between the Government of the Hejaz and Nejd (later Saudi Arabia) and the Polish Government.

The correspondence includes the following:

  • Details of the visit of a Polish delegation to Jedda in May 1930.
  • Reports on the despatch of arms and ammunition (as well as coal, sugar and cement) from Poland to the Hejaz in August 1930.
  • Details of Emir Feisal's [Fayṣal bin ‘Abd al-‘Azīz Āl Sa‘ūd's] visit to Warsaw in May 1932.
  • Discussion regarding the Saudi Government's debt to Polish arms manufacturers for the arms purchased in 1930 (according to the correspondence, one half of the bill for this purchase remained outstanding in 1934), and whether or not such a debt might prejudice British debt claims against the Saudi Government.

The file features the following correspondents: the High Commissioner for Egypt (Miles Wedderburn Lampson); His Majesty's Minister at Jedda (Sir Andrew Ryan); His Majesty's Chargé d’Affaires to Jedda (William Linskill Bond, succeeded by Cecil Gervase Hope Gill); His Majesty's Ambassador in Warsaw (William Erskine).

The file includes a divider which gives a list of correspondence references contained in the file by year. This is placed at the back of the correspondence.
