On Saturday afternoon, June 20th, the Marconi
Athletic Club organised a Gymkhana and Fete to cele
brate the Fortieth Anniversary of the first wireless
patent applied for by Marchese Marconi in June 1896.
The Gymkhana, which took place in brilliant summer
weather, at the Chib’s Sports Ground at New Malden,
was attended by well over 1,000 visitors.
£ Amongst the distinguished guests who honoured the
^Club with their presence, were Lord Inverforth and the
Hon. Nita Weir, Mr. and Mrs. Edward Wilshaw, Mr.
and Mrs. H. A. White, Mr. and Mrs. H. C. Van de Velde,
Mr. and Mrs. K. L. Wood, Mr. C. E. Rickard, Mr. and
Mrs. R. H. White, and Mr. and Mrs. F. S. Hayburn.
An attractive programme of athletic events was
followed with close attention by the large assembly,
and the special events, such as the Advertising Race ;
Ladies’ Hatmaking Competition ; The Push-Ball Match’
and many others, greatly amused the crowd. Un
doubtedly the funniest item on the programme was a
comic bicycle polo match, in which Mickey and Minnie
Mouse, and other famous film characters, mounted on
bicycles and armed with household brooms, played a
spirited game of polo in true Roehampton fashion.
Taking a cue from the popular tune, “Everything
Stops for Tea,” the proceedings were interrupted at
4-30, when 956 people sat down to tea in a marquee
of truly cathedral-like dimensions. The feat of serving
so many people at one time without a hitch deserves a

special word of praise for the organisers of this thor-
oughly enjoyable occasion.
At the conclusion of the Meeting, Mrs. Edward

account of the summer heat.
